About the Chippewa
The Chippewa Northwestern
Railway Company is a one-inch
scale railroad located on the
grounds of the Seward County
Historical Society's Museum in
Goehner, Nebraska. On the
second and fourth Sundays,
May through October, the
general public can ride FREE
behind one-inch scale steam
locomotives.

The Chippewa Northwestern
Railway Company is not a club -
it is is privately owned.
Volunteers who wish to operate
their locomotive will find coal
and water supplied at no cost.
As of right now, there are NO dues or fees. Qualified volunteers without an operating locomotive have access to a battery powered F-7a locomotive and a 4-6-2 coal-burning Pacific. The Pacific locomotive will be used to teach interested individuals how to operate a steam locomotive.

The Chippewa's main objective at Goehner is to provide hands-on access to all interested hobbyists of Live Steam Railroading, particularly in one-inch scale live steam. To become a Volunteer you need only to show up on any scheduled Work or Regular Run day and help out.

Volunteers on the Chippewa at Goehner are encouraged to join the Seward County Historical Society. See the Society's pages for dues and where to send them. We are very privileged for the Society to provide us with such a nice place to have a live steam railroad. Your support goes a
long way to keep the Museum going as well as the railroad.

Workdays
Workdays on the railroad
are the third Saturday
each month, April
through October.
Someone is on site on
these days from 11:00AM
to 4:00PM to lead the
work parties.

The primary project on
work days is track work.
Engine #1227 (F-9a) is
used to handle work train
duties. On occasion, a
steam locomotive is also
used for work train duties.

With 1800 feet of mainline, there is "always" track work to do. Tamping and aligning, tie replacement, and checking the more than 360 pairs of joint bars, each with 4 nuts and bolts that work loose, are just some of the regular maintenance projects the railroad requires to stay in the
best operational condition. If you don't know how to do any of this, don't worry - that is what we are all about! We would be more than happy to show you how.

The Chippewa does not have a newsletter. Instead, we use an E-mail list called the Switchlist. We use this to share railroad information as well as telling about upcoming events and work at the railroad. If you are interested in subscribing to the Switchlist drop us an E-mail
